In honor of October being national dental hygiene month, our dentist in Chicago wanted to point out the importance of perfecting the basics of oral care. The American Dental Association notes this year’s theme revolves around four routines that are essential in helping people maintain healthy smiles, including brushing, flossing, rinsing and chewing. Here are some important tips that can make all of the difference in your oral health!

The Proper Brushing Technique

The task itself seems pretty mundane, but a few small tips have a big impact! What kind of brush are you using? Most patients should be using a soft-bristled brush unless noted otherwise by our dentists in Chicago. You should be brushing your teeth two times every day for at least two minutes each time. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and brush all surfaces of your teeth.

Flossing

It is also beneficial to floss your teeth once a day to help get rid of plaque that is not removed by brushing. Getting rid of this plaque by flossing can help ensure you don’t have a buildup of calculus or tartar in your mouth.

Rinsing & Chewing

Using mouthwash once a day is beneficial in achieving fresh breath and getting rid of biofilm and bacteria. Chewing sugarless gum for at least 20 minutes after eating can also be beneficial, as it helps increase your saliva flow and neutralize acid that bacteria produce.
Make regular appointments with our dentist in Chicago to ensure your mouth is as healthy as can be!
