Sedation Dentistry – Chicago & Skokie

visiting the dentist - oral surgeonOur Dentist in Skokie Talks About Sedation Dentistry

If the fear of going to the dentist has kept you from taking proper care of your teeth – don’t worry, you are not alone. Anxiety over going to the dentist is extremely common, so much so that some people are willing to endure chronic tooth pain rather than visit a dental office. Sedation dentistry provides a solution for anyone who dreads going to the dentist, while offering more comfortable dental treatment for every patient.

Whether you are considering a general dentistry or a cosmetic dentistry procedure, conscious sedation is the best way to reduce or eliminate the stress and anxiety that accompanies a visit to the dentist. Whether you are scheduled for a professional teeth cleaning, routine checkup, or more complex dental procedures, sedation dentistry is an indispensable tool utilized to calm every patient, but especially those who are overtly fearful.

Levels of Sedation Dentistry

There are various levels of sedation dentistry services, depending on the procedure being performed and the severity of the patient’s dental anxiety. Ranging from minimal to deep sedation. Each of these techniques can be used for any dental procedure, no matter how minimal. Our goal is to ensure a pain-free, anxiety-free experience for every one of our Skokie and Chicago patients – every time.

Through the use of various medications, we offer sedation dentistry that allows patients to relax during their dental visit. While you may hear sedation dentistry referred to as “sleep dentistry,” that term is not really accurate. Patients, even those who are deeply sedated, usually remain awake, albeit, very relaxed. However, if general anesthesia is used, the patient will be completely asleep.

The levels of oral sedation—nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas”—can be explained as follows:

  • Minimal sedation – the patient is still awake but he or she is very relaxed
  • Moderate sedation – the patient may speak unintelligibly and probably won’t remember much of the procedure
  • Deep sedation – the patient is still able to be awakened but is on the edge of unconsciousness – typically used for patients undergoing oral surgery
  • General anesthesia – the patient is not easily awakened and is completely unconscious
